Kanaka’s Home

Kanaka’s Home has been a Cultural Icon of Bangalore or so to say Ancient India. She resided in a Century old mansion at Basavanagudi Bangalore for more than three decades. Century old mansion had its own story to tell, architecture and gave us a picture of old Bangalore. This housed sculptors- Vadiraj and his Gurukul students who sculpted even older ancient styles of Sculptures of different eras like Hoysala, Vijayangara, Chalukya etc. This house echoed with yet another ancient form of art- Hindusthani Classical music riyaz by her daughter Sumathi Murthy and niece Srividya Jois (myself!). Stone sculpting sounds with metal chisels added tunes and rhythm to music. In addition those sweet chirping birds from its garden, huge trees, fragrance of flowers like sampige (Champak), mango trees all added a very good ambience.  This Iconic Cultural home attracted many eminent personalities and artists like musicians, literary persons, Scholars which used to result in interesting and informative talk sessions. And of course, this house was always filled with Kanaka’s family and relatives. All integrated in a single place gave a picture of Ancient India and Cultural old Bangalore.
